LEGENDARY NIGHTCLUBS - MADAME SATÃ

LEGENDARY NIGHTCLUBS
TODAY: MADAME SATÃ

One day, I was looking the statistics in my page, I realized that several people was acessing my page, even in another countries. For this reason, and in respect to this people that always is accessing the page and encouraging me to continue in this journey that I try to provide information about music, cinema, and other things, I decided to create some posts that I already post in portuguse, but now, in english.

So, for to start this, I decided to speak about some legendary nightclubs. I will not remade all content in old post. But I will created a new one, more concise.

What I mean with "lengendary nightclubs"expression? Well, some nightclubs, made history. And I will try to tell a little about the history of those houses. In Brazil, Madame Satã, in USA, CBGB, in London, Batcave some examples.

So, let's go!!!

THE NIGHTCLUB

Opened in October 21, 1983, at midnight, the Madame Satã was maybe the most important nightclub in São Paulo, Brazil. Cradle of pop culture, rock, new wave, fashion, and other events, in Madame Satã you could see literature events, fashion shows, exhibitions, rock shows, performances, strip-teases, reading poems and other events. Besides being able to enjoy of the drinks, and good music.

The house, has several names in the past, like: Satã (in english: Satan), or just Madame, Casarão (Big House in english) , The The and Morcegóvia.

Several jornalists, stylists, poets, DJs, rock musicians, attending the house.
Some people were the house in the past, told that the best years of this nightclub was in the first 4 years.

This nightclub was created by 4 friends: Márcia, Mirian, Wílson and Williams. All of them was work on Theatre and had the idea to create a house with those features. The objective was to create a enviroment where all tribes was welcome.

They had a intention to create a house to make more than one different events in the same night. For example, in one day you could to see a strip tease show, and in the same night, some event related with poems or fashion.

Some artists told that today, it's very difficult to create some similar. Not due infrastucture but by the people. The music moment in that time was perfect. New Wave moment was invading the world, and several artists, music, discs that some people in São Paulo brought from the Europe or United States, first came in Madade Satã.

The djs had a very important function too, some of them travelled to other countries and brought news (lps) to play in Madame Satã. Several exclusive material.

Above some braziliam bands and artists that played on Madame Satã:

RPM
Titãs
Fellini
Akira S e As Garotas Que Erraram
Gerald Thomas
Renato Choen
Carla Camurati
Arrigo Barnabé
Chico Botelho
Jardim Elétrico
Azul 29

Besides of the artists, Madame had some iconic characters, for example a woman that was eating cabbage inside a jail, had a guy called "Mãozinha" in english (Little Hand), that was a weird guy, that used to said few words and that currently was strategically in some places of the house to observe the ladies walking up and down stairs. He had a strange desire to girls stepped on with their high heels on his hand.

Above some artists that presented in the nightclub, after re-opened:

As Mercenárias
Cida Moreira
Inocentes
Edgard Scandurra
Kães Vadius
D-Vision
Covenant
Zé do Caixão or Coffin Fedder
Douglas McCarthy
Vomito Negro
Severe Illusion
Toninho do Diabo

I particulary went to the house, one or twice, I don't remember, but I confess that when I entered, I felt that place, it wasn't a common place.

When you entered in the house, you saw a big bar, normally at saturdays, the house works with system "open bar". You could see a weird images on the walls, and a old architecture. I went downstairs and without doubts, the most dark dance floor that I already saw.

Another interesting think, was a bat image on the walls, that you cannot see what was providing that image. Very crazy!!! Some people probably already drunk, swore that they can saw the bat flying...lol!!
Other funny item was a light that distorts the people face. The person is walking on the house and was realizing the people face distorcing. So freak.

In dance floor you could listen artists like: The Cure, The Smiths, Sisters of Mercy,  The Ramones, The Mission and other bands.

There is also in the house, a dark alley where some people had some hot encounters. Even heard rumors of what happened until sex in those dark alleys, face it, it's not something to doubt.

Fights between gangs were unfortunately too frequent. Punk, Carecas (Bald Guys gang), goths, bikers, black metallers, among other groups and tribes, providing some violent fights out of the nightclub.  One curious fact was that virtually never reached the house. Typically all fights occured only outside the club. All people always respected the club, like a sanctuary.

Other attraction was the performances. Very common in Madame Satã. Performances of the all types, since girls making strip tease or transvestite signing, dancing and taking a bath. Claúdia Wonder was the most famous tranvestite.

One consideration important to do, is that in this time, during those first 4 years, the news that arrived to Brazil, was about AIDS and HIV virus. A fear was created for all. Several goers had the paranoia thinking that could be catch the disease just sharing a drink or touching someone sick. After years later, was proved that not exists "Risks Gorup", all people could contract the disease.

Some people also using sneaky way, drugs in the club, but it wasn't for everyone, because was expensive to buy, mainly to the punks, that didn't have money.

Marcelo Leite de Moraes wrote a book about the nightclub, telling some stories lived on this place. I particullary not read the book, but I plan to buy in the future. I left here this tip to anyone that has more intersting to know the Madame Satã history.

A i mportant documentary was made too about this iconic nightclub was: "O Importante É  Ser Eu e Não o Outro" in english "The important is  be me and not the other" (by Gabriela Prosdocimi, Daniel Mori, Nivia de Souza and Raphael Calles.

Other documentary will be released Uma Nova Onda de Liberdade - A História do Madame Satã, A New Freedom Wave - The History of The Madame Satã, made by Wladimir Cruz.
