NEW FACES OF HORROR

NEW FACES OF HORROR (Franchises)

Goodnight Mommy scene

The horror movies is passing for a reborn in cinema. At present moment it's very difficult to create something totally new, which does not resemble the great classics of the past. Movies like The Exorcist, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, Amityville Horror, Friday 13TH, Nightmare on Elm Street, Poltergeist and others left a legacy in this segment, that new movies, needs to overcome.

But some of these titles were successfull in recent years, in this post I will name some of the franchises that have worked.

Probably some of them will make reference in the next decade, or some elements of those movies will be reutilized for new success.

Let´s go to this new top 13 of horror movies!!!

13) HOUSE OF THE END OF STREET

Synopsis:

The story opens with a scene from the point-of-view of a psychotic killer, who looks like a teenage long-haired girl wearing a night-dress, killing first their mother and then their father with a hammer in the middle of a stormy night. The events are blurred and warped as if the killer is deranged or drugged.

This movie had a old version on the past, and was release again in the last decade.

12) GRAVE ENCOUNTERS

Synopsis:

Wonderfull surprise, this movie was release in 2011 and received a new version in 2012.

The film opens with television producer Jerry Hartfield describing Grave Encounters, a paranormal reality television program directed by and starring ghost hunter Lance Preston, which was canceled after five episodes. Hartfield explains that the events about to be shown in the film is raw footage from the sixth and final episode filmed, edited only for time-restraint purposes.

11) REC

Release the first movie in 2007. 4 sequences.

Synopsis:

REC revolves around a television reporter, Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco), and her cameraman, Pablo (only his trainers are shown, Pablo Rosso), who cover the night shift in one of Barcelona's local fire stations for the fictional documentary television series Mientras ustedes duermen (While You Sleep). The firehouse receives a call from an apartment building about a woman who is trapped. When Manu (Ferrán Terraza) and Álex (David Vert) arrive, the police break down the door, with Ángela and Pablo recording their actions. The woman becomes extraordinarily aggressive and bites one of the policemen. Meanwhile, the terrified residents gather in the entrance hall, and look on as the police and military seal off the building.

10) FINAL DESTINATION

Synopsis:

After a teenager has a terrifying vision of him and his friends dying in a plane crash, he prevents the accident only to have Death hunt them down, one by one.

This franchise was already had 5 sequences and normally the story is about death chasing people. Some scenes sequences are somewhat improbable but even that this film became a success and won many fans around the world.

My emphasis to the truck accident scene in the second movie of the franchise.

9) HOSTELL

Release in 2005.

Synopsis:

The film tells the story of two college students traveling across Europe, who find themselves preyed upon by a mysterious group that tortures and kills kidnapped victims.

Normally this film put on their sequences 3 basics elements: extreme violence, sexy woman and careless friends who are drawn by the women

This film has 3 sequences until the moment.

The film centers on a young couple, Katie and Micah, who are haunted by a supernatural presence in their home. It is presented in the style of "found footage", from cameras set up by the couple in an attempt to document what is haunting them.

This franchise had 6 sequences and was a great success in the United States.

Interesting note the people reaction on the theaters in some movies of the serie.

7) THE PURGE

 Synopsis:

It is based on a future dystopic America where every year there is a 12-hour period during which all crime, including murder, is legal.

This is a extremely tense movie, not recommended for cardiac people. 3 sequences, released 2013.

6) SINISTER

It's a american supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. It stars Ethan Hawke as fictional true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt who discovers a box of home movies in his attic that puts his family in danger.

5) I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE

Synopsis:

Day of the Woman (better known by its re-release title, I Spit on Your Grave) is a 1978 American rape-and-revenge exploitation-horror film. The film received a limited release, with a wider release in 1980.

The film is noted for its controversy and prominent film critics condemned the film for its graphic violence, nudity, obscene language, and lengthy depictions of gang rape which take up 30 minutes of the film's run-time, and the motion picture remains controversial to this day, even being considered to be one of the worst films ever made. The film was named in 2010 one of Time's Top 10 Ridiculously Violent Movies.[1] It was remade that same year. Roger Ebert famously reviewed the film and claimed it to be the "worst film ever made" and a "vile bag of garbage". He gave it the rare score of 0 of 4 stars.

4) GOODNIGHT MOMMY

Synopsis:

Released 2014.

The only film on this list, that not have a sequence until the moment. But I needed to speak of it.

Twin boys move to a new home with their mother after she has face changing cosmetic surgery, but under her bandages is someone the children don't recognize.

Probably this movie will receive a new sequence in the future.

3) THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE

Synopsis:

3 sequences.

Released in 2009. A mad scientist kidnaps and mutilates a trio of tourists in order to reassemble them into a human centipede, created by stitching their mouths to each others' rectums.

The sequence number 3, probably is the final sequence.

Commom elements on this franchise: torture, violence and disgusting scenes.

For me, one of the most disgusting movies that I already saw.

2) INSIDIOUS

Synopsis:

Released 2010.

A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

My favorite on this top 13.

This film it's so creepy and intense. Great sequences, great performances, if you didn't watch anyone of the sequence, see.

After I watch movies like: The Ring (2002), Amityville Horror and The exorcism of Emily Rose (2005 both), Martyrs (2008), Insidious is the movie that more keep my attention.

1) THE CONJURING

Synopsis:

Realeased 2013 and sequence in 2016.

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (the famous Warrens of the Annabelle) work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.

The trailer of the film number 2, it's amazing!!!

The Conjuring is a 2013 American supernatural horror film directed by James Wan and written by Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes. The film is the first installment in The Conjuring film series.[3] Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga star as Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent cases of haunting. Their reports inspired The Amityville Horror.[4] The Warrens come to the assistance of the Perron family (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor), who are experiencing increasingly disturbing events in their farmhouse in Rhode Island in 1971.[5]

The Conjuring was released in the United States and Canada on July 19, 2013, and in the United Kingdom and India on August 6, 2013.
